A piece of Amsterdam’s busy Schiphol airport was refreshed by Dutch designers Tjep – theSchiphol Departure Lounge 4 now showcases a space where social interaction is encouraged and the lack of plane views was dimmed with the help of stylized plane benches. This second collaboration between the airport and the Dutch designers was fruitfully transformed into a green oasis depicting a piece of today’s design scene – vivid colors and geometric furniture pieces shaping a cozy corner where travelers enjoy spending the time before the flight. Appearing like a community space rather than an international airport lounge, this comfortable, modern space gathers sofas by Joep van Lieshout and benches designed to resemble planes under the high ceilings. A slide was incorporated into the waiting room – on each side having wooden bleachers topped with dark green cushions overlooking the vividly green sofas below. Hanging above this dynamic space arrangement, a ribbon artwork created by M.C. Escher breaks the monotony of the mid-air space. This airport lounge design was not complete without the integration of more than 100 power sockets to power your gadgets and make sure the time you spend here is not wasted time.
