Palais Lumière by Pierre Cardin and Rodrigo Basilicati inShare1








Dezeen Wire: a skyscraper by fashion designer Pierre Cardin is set to be constructed in Venice, which at 245 metres high will be more than twice the height of the bell tower of St. Mark’s Basilica.



The 60-storey Palais Lumière will comprise three fin-shaped towers connected horizontally by six huge steel discs.



Located on the mainland in former industrial area Porto Marghera, the building will provide a shopping centre, a hotel, a theatre and conference centre, offices, restaurants and over 284 apartments.



Swimming pools, gardens and ponds will be located on the upper decks and a helipad will be positioned on the rooftop.



Cardin designed the building with the help of architect nephew Rodrigo Basilicati and is reported to be “fed up with the delays” that have been holding up construction, which is currently due to start in September.



Other skyscrapers making the news recently include the Shard in London and a new district of skyscrapers in South Korea.

Here’s some information from the project website:

The objective of Palais Lumière is to bring together everything that a person needs in a space conceived as a unified whole, where every location within the complex can be reached by foot in just a few minutes.



To this end, the building features floors for residential or office use that alternate with floors having public spaces or that are open to the public, where large numbers of people can gather.



This results in a building whose value index – the relationship between the functions that the building must perform and the total cost of the project – is positive.



Level -1 plan

In addition to striving for optimal efficacy and efficiency in the construction, the project emphasizes functionality – with structural and building services solutions that address the environmental sustainability problems relating to energy consumption that are inherent in tall buildings – while also paying close attention to safety aspects.



Ground floor plan

The unique shape of the building was conceived from a desire to create a structure that is destined to become a symbol of the ongoing transformation of the area.



Level 1 plan

This sculptural architectural work was created using the capabilities of morphological-structural calculations, increasing the scale of the object and moulding it into a complex form of such uniqueness that it produces an unparalleled increase in the market value.



Level 2 plan

The building consists of three towers having a similar shape but differing in height.



Level 4 plan

The total height is 245 metres, with a maximum of 60 habitable floors and a ground area of 30,000 m2.



Level 5 plan

Each of the three vertical elements, arranged in a radial pattern 120° apart from one another, has a maximum width of 20m, creating an interior layout that is ideal for both residential and tertiary sector uses.



Level 6 plan

The three towers are positioned around an open central area that houses 21 panoramic lifts, which provide direct access to the large circular floors destined primarily for commercial and recreational uses.



Level 15 plan

These circular floors, six in all, are spaced 40 m apart and have a lens-shaped cross section to optimize aerodynamics and limit the pressure exerted by the wind on the structure.



Level 16 plan

The complex features 284 private residences (approximately 45,000 m2), hotel space (34,000 m2), as well as office space, commercial and service activities, applied research facilities, a conference centre, higher education facilities and restaurants (130,000 m2).



Level 25 plan

The shopping centre is located on the first two floors of the three towers and the circular underground level, where there is also a large combined conference centre and theatre/auditorium with 6,200/7,000 seats, which can be subdivided by an ad hoc system into six rooms having 600/700 seats each and two rooms having 1,300/1,400 seats.



Level 26 plan

These rooms are acoustically insulated, allowing them to be used as conference rooms, theatres or university lecture halls.



Level 34 plan

Finally, there are more than 4,000 parking spaces and garages located on two floors beneath the building.



Level 35 plan

Each tower has 17 lifts, 14 of which hold 7 people, two of which hold 15 and one of which holds 50. The lifts are contact-free (except during emergencies), running along electronically-controlled magnetic guides that eliminate friction and noise.



Level 36 plan

Thanks to the Palais Lumière’s 72 lifts, it is be possible for 650 people to reach the panoramic restaurant on the sixth circular floor or disc (at a height of 225 metres) in just over a minute, and for 1,600 people to reach the cinema/multiplex area on the second disc (16th floor) in less than 5 minutes.



Level 45 plan

The building’s six discs feature more than 4 hectares (44,000 m2) of hanging gardens, as well as public and private ponds and swimming pools.



Level 46 plan

The “green space” found inside this structure more than doubles the area occupied by the building’s foundation.



Level 55 plan

In addition, the building is situated in a 250,000 m2 oasis-like park that is energy self-sufficient (including lighting), as it uses excess power that the building generates from solar, and more importantly, wind sources.

The Cloud by MVRDV








Skyscrapers in Seoul: Dutch architects MVRDV have designed two skyscrapers for Seoul, Korea, that will be joined at the hip by a pixelated cluster.

The cluster of blocks will swell out from the twenty-seventh floors of the 260 and 300 metre-high towers, collectively named The Cloud, to accommodate an atrium, restaurants, gym facilities, a conference centre and office-hotels.



Luxury apartments are to fill the remaining floors of the 54 and 60 storey towers, some of which will feature double-height rooms.

Townhouses will occupy the ground levels, while the top floors will be reserved for penthouses.



Landscape architect Martha Schwartz has designed a series of plazas, gardens and pools to surround the new buildings.



The project is part of a masterplan for the area by New York architects Studio Libeskind and is due to complete in 2015.

MVRDV designs The Cloud: two connected luxury residential towers in Seoul, Korea

Yongsan Dream Hub corporation presented today the MVRDV designed residential development of the Yongsan Business district: two connected luxury residential high-rises. A 260 meter tall tower and a 300 meter tall tower are connected in the centre by a pixelated cloud of additional program offering amenities and outside spaces with wide views. The towers with a total surface of 128,000m2 are expected to be completed in 2015.



The two towers are positioned at the entrance of the Yongsan Dreamhub project, a master plan designed by Studio Libeskind, extending the business district of the South Korean capital Seoul. The southern tower reaches a height of 260 meters with 54 floors, the northern tower 300 meters with 60 floors. Halfway, at the level of the 27th floor the cloud is positioned, a 10 floor tall pixelated volume, connecting the two towers. The cloud differentiates the project from other luxury developments, it moves the plinth upwards and makes space on ground floor level for public gardens, designed by Martha Schwartz.



Usually a high-rise adds little to the immediate surrounding city life, by integrating public program to the cloud the typology adds in a more social way to the city. Inside the cloud, besides the residential function, 14,357m2 of amenities are located: the sky lounge – a large connecting atrium, a wellness centre, conference centre, fitness studio, various pools, restaurants and cafes. On top of the cloud are a series of public and private outside spaces, patios, decks, gardens and pools. To allow fast access the cloud is accessible by special express elevators.

The luxurious apartments range from 80m2 to 260m2 of which some offer double height ceilings , patios or gardens. The towers with a perfect square floor plan contain four corner apartments per floor offering each fine daylight conditions and cross ventilation. Each tower is accessed via a grand lobby at ground level; the rest of the ground floor is divided into town houses. In addition to the amenities the Cloud furthermore contains 9,000m2 of Officetel (Office-Hotel) a typical Korean typology and 25,000m2 panoramic apartments with specific lay-outs. The top floors of both towers are reserved for penthouse apartments of 1200m2 with private roof gardens.

The structural facade reveals the program behind it and its characteristic grid is extended over the surroundings where it creates gardens, pools and plazas. Parking is solved underground and the next metro station is in five minutes walking distance.

MVRDV is lead architect and works with architect of record Siaplan, Arup, Benoy Retail architects and Martha Schwartz Partners for the landscape.

Burj Khalifa by SOM






Here are some photos of the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa by Chicago office Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, which opened in Dubai earlier this month.



The 828 metre skyscraper includes residences, offices, a hotel and an observation deck on the 124th floor.

‘Burj Khalifa’ is unveiled to the world and its official height is 828 metres

The world’s tallest building was unveiled to an estimated crowd of over 400,000 and the world, in a crescendo of fireworks, lasers and fountain displays. The official height of the tower, unveiled as ‘Burj Khalifa’, was announced as 828 metres (2,716.5 ft).



‘Burj Khalifa’, developed by Emaar Properties (www.emaar.com), is the world’s tallest building according to the three criteria of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat: ‘Height to Architectural Top’, ‘Height To Highest Occupied Floor’, and ‘Height To Tip’.



The tower is 320 metres taller than Taiwan’s Taipei 101, which had held the title of world’s tallest building since 2004, the year when the project was announced.



Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, said that the tower represented a symbol of hope to the Arab world and a shining example of human achievement. “Thousands of people from more than 100 countries have contributed to the realisation of ‘Burj Khalifa’. The tower embodies the spirit and optimism of global collaboration, and shows to the world what can be achieved when communities work in partnership.”



A dramatic sound, light, firework and fountain display described the evolution of the tower, and ended in a breathtaking climax of lasers and fireworks, bathing the tower and the surrounding area in white light.



‘Burj Khalifa’ comprises luxury residences and offices, the world’s first Armani Hotel, and the world’s highest observation deck, ‘At the Top’, which is located on the tower’s 124th floor. Around 90 per cent of the tower’s offices and apartments have been sold.



‘At the Top’ opens officially to the public on January 5. The handover of offices and apartments starts in February, and the Armani Hotel Dubai will be opened by its designer, Giorgio Armani, on March 18.



More than 60 leading consultants including South Korea’s Samsung Corporation and New York-based Turner Construction International realised the design for Burj Khalifa by Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM).
