Constructed three stories high, with level one designed for principal’s office, swimming pool and playgrounds, the second floor is built for classrooms and third story is where all the facilities are located.

The design of the look for the kindergarten is simple and yet, abstract. It uses a double layer skin cover made from aluminum composite shaped into a folding layer, which follows the shape of the roof. As the position of the building is toward the sun from the west, this is used to buffer the striking heat from the sun.

The structure of the building is built with high consideration towards the safety of the children. The principal’s office is specifically positioned in the first level near the playgrounds and pool to ease the principal for monitoring the children with their activities. The tile of the playground itself uses rubber tiles with 1.5 cm thickness and the swimming pool is fenced to prevent accidents with the children.

Vertical circulation is constructed with inclining ramp covered in rubber carpet to ensure the safety of children from falling off the stairs. The handrail is placed between the ramps, and can be used with.

The school uses natural lightning from the skylights to light up the space within the school.

Santo Domingo Savio Kindergarten

Set on a steep (22%), and rocky slope, this project chose a modular approach that could adapt to the topography without the use of expensive dynamite to break the existing rocks. For this reason, the project is assembled in two levels that connect through covered ramps. The kindergarten articulates with the neighborhood by seeking to avoid the demolition of existing buildings and by adhering to strict distance and withdrawal regulations.

A modular strategy consisting of flexible pieces allows us to set the kindergarten around a compact, two-level, head and a longitudinal tail at the top a level. The “head” is occupied by younger children and revolves around an introverted courtyard. The tail, occupied by older children, defines a longitudinal terrace for playing and sightseeing.

Buildings at the Santo Domingo Quarter are typically self-construction homes in red brick and concrete flat roofs, which allow vertical growth over time. These buildings gradually grow in height and shift their reddish appearance by plaster and paint of different colors that inhabitants enjoy and understand as higher-quality buildings. Given this scenario, we wanted the project to bring to evidence the changes in height, staggering, and the quarter’s geometrical irregularity and diversity, as well as its washed granite finishing in shades of green and blue, seeking that the new infrastructure be readily recognized and at the same time that would organically articulate to the life of the quarter.

Kindergarten Competition Proposal / ARHIS

The aim of ARHIS for the kindergarten competition proposal in Riga, Latvia is to create a new type of kindergarten, where children can easily learn to incorporate with each other, the urban environment, and with society. The project solution is a public building with a three-dimensional park integrated in the urban structure and to become a part of the city public space and greenery system, which is a part of the Riga development plan. Common spaces like swimming pool, sports hall, assembly hall and canteen are organized around the inner courtyard, enclosed by an operable glazed facade facing the outdoor space, giving a possibility to open them and expand towards the courtyard. The communication space between common rooms can be used for various activities.

The courtyard park is organized in various levels for learning and playing activities. The volumes for each children age-group are designed to be personalized and different, ensuring recognition and convenient orientation for children.

The spatial green park bends over the building connecting the courtyard with the urban public space. It also creates an integration of the inner life of kindergarten with the city public space. Children can be joined and separated according to the safety or kindergarten needs. The park contains playgrounds and sports fields for children of various ages and interests, available for children of the kindergarten and for public use.
