French Team Wins the 2012 Solar Decathlon Europe



At the 2012 Solar Decathlon Europe competition that just concluded in Madrid, the CANOPEA house by French team Rhône Alpes has been awarded the first prize. Very close in the ranking, in second place, was the Spanish Andalucía Team with their prototype, PATIO 2.12. The third prize went to the Italian team Med in Italy.

The concept of CANOPEA house evolves around the idea of a 'Nanotower': small towers housing an individual unit on each floor. Each top floor hosts a common laundry area, a summer kitchen, and a relaxing place for the entire community providing space for gardens and storage.

During the closing ceremony, the Public Choice Award was given to Andalucía Team's Patio 2.12, as the most popular house of the Villa Solar visitors. The EHU Team (Pais Vasco, Spain) received the most online votes.

Floating Island on the Move


The Solar Floating Resort is an example of what the distant future might hold when it comes to architecture, our reliance on renewable resources, and dealing with overpopulation on land. Covered completely in a photovoltaic skin, the resort is 100% self-sufficient and non-polluting. On top of that, the floating palace is actually a modular system that divides into much smaller components that can be moved and assembled almost anywhere.

Concept Stadium DCA

Concept Stadium by DCA (Design Crew for Architecture) is an exercise of reflection willing to propose an unconstrained answer, free from whether economic or programmatic concerns, in order to provide a prospective vision of what could be, in their opinion, the ideal rugby stadium. Today, stadiums are iconic shapes answering to the representation stake, as they are bearing the image of a club, a city, a region. But paradoxically, these formal thoughts are concerning the shell and therefore establish the singular stadium status as autonomous object, disconnected from its environment. DCA conducts two parallel activities: operational projects & conceptual workshops. The workshop exercise is an opportunity for us to maintain a discussion and reflection on various topics associated with our business. If the choice to focus our thinking on a stadium to house the French national rugby team has been inspired by the actual project initiated by the French Rugby Federation, we wish to specify that our approach is, however, unrelated to F.F.R.

Concept Stadium is not a 95% of the time empty arena. This is a public space which hosts sporting events. Concept Stadium is a destination outside of match days. The development of double-ramps can offer places for multipurpose activities where visitors can move freely outside the marked plots (lying, sitting, picnicking, reading, running, playing ball or badminton). Concept Stadium© is a proximity space, it will be daily used with attendance peaks in the late afternoon, on Wednesdays and weekends. Though the Stadium is also a Park. The park is inhabited by small public facilities that will participate in the life of the city and enhance the Stadium attractiveness to the city scale. Developing around the grandstands, the Park will be a place to relax proposing many sports and cultural activities. Concept Stadium will be a place for promenades, or somewhere to simply lounge on a bench.

The traditional ring device distribution of the stadium is distorted to become a continuous ramp that circles the grandstands to offer a continuous fluid path from the forecourt to the top of the bleachers. This ramp is treated as a park, and thickened, it becomes a double ramp that houses in its lower level developable surfaces along a pedestrian gallery that could harbor shops or small facilities such as a rugby museum for example. The connection between the upper level (garden) and lower level (gallery) of the double-ramp is made through generous patios. To distribute and manage the flows, this double-ramp device is doubled, thus we have the north double-ramp and the south double-ramp.

Intermediate ramps are inserted between the two double-ramps. They are connected to the grandstands access and house retail outlets and toilets for spectators on match days. The University of Pittsburgh decided to expand and renovate Benedum Hall, the 1960′s home for the Swanson School of Engineering on Pitt’s main campus in Oakland. The original limestone clad modernist tower and disconnected auditorium buildings had become obsolete, as the school’s focus shifted to the 21st century disciplines of nanotechnology, bioengineering, and materials research. As a result, EDGE Studio and Nbbj have designed a more flexible facility that is advantageous to inter-departmental cooperation, and helps attract the best and brightest research faculty and students from around the world.

The project has two segments: a 22,000 square foot addition to house the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, and a full renovation in phases of the existing buildings, including full upgrades to all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and life safety systems.

The project started with an extensive master planning and programming phase, with the often conflicting needs and desires of over 70 research faculty and administrators. Both the addition and renovations were completed while the building remained fully occupied and functional, making the planning, move management, and construction management a significant challenge.

The addition, housing the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, forms a raised link on the site’s north side between the original tower and auditorium. A poured-in-place concrete structure carefully threads its way through the existing basement and subbasement lab spaces below, expressed by the large sloped piers supporting the building over O’Hara Street.

The metal panel and curtain-wall-clad addition contains computer labs, conference spaces, and administrative spaces, which acts as a laboratory for cross disciplinary research into sustainable building and product design. It also contains a new four story open stair hall, linking the three buildings of the assembly, forming a new entry down to the original building’s basement which has been opened up to house a new Teaching / Learning Center.

The project achieved LEED Gold Certification. However, the most important sustainable characteristic is the work that goes on inside, researching into water use, energy use, building construction systems, and collaborations with sustainable technology industries.
