Kitchen as Metaphor of a Multicultural Reality by Erik Klein Wolterink

Many people probably think it is pointless to have a complete picture of what lies behind all those cupboard doors in their kitchen. Photographer Erik Klein Wolterink believes that all these items portray reality in an original way. To prove this, he created “Kitchen Portraits”, a print series displaying assembled open cupboards, fridges and drawers from different parts of the world: “A well-stocked kitchen refers to Turkish cookery with goat’s cheese and halal sausage. But the mix for homemade apple pie is a witness of an open attitude towards other customs. A mother shows her African roots with a plastic Voltic Sparkling Water bottle filled with palm oil. Female students undermine our prejudices with a spotless kitchen. In the kitchen of a family with growing children, a packet of Korma curry of Pakistani descent and cardamom pods try to square themselves with Dutch kitchen habits. Here the Dutch sandwich culture leaves its traces in the sandwich wrappers in the drawer, the sandwiches in the fridge and the Nutella chocolate paste in the sink cupboard next to the abrasive agent. Bespoke Kitchen Design Meeting the Owners’ Flamboyant Nature

We received photos and information about an intriguing kitchen project from Designer Kitchen, a company from Northern Ireland, UK. According to the official press relief, “the brief was to design a timeless kitchen that would provide a dramatic first impression and deliver exceptional value for money. This replacement kitchen design needed to fit into the existing architectural framework as no structural changes were to be made. The client wanted an extraordinary kitchen to express their flamboyant nature. By recycling elements from the original kitchen including the sink and handles; re-fabricating small sections of worktop, consciously separating the design process from manufacturing and tendering the finished design with selected manufacturers, I was able to deliver this kitchen for under £25,000.

The foundation of the design was developed by considering how the uncompromising architecture and fixed cooking position related to five clear approaches to the kitchen. Multiple visual hooks were presented on each sight line. This information was layered onto the functional and social patterns identified as being particular to the family unit which in turn ensured the optimum level of efficiency and visual impact. To optimise the available floor space and avoid architectural “nip points” the island was given a unique radius and angled tail. Unique feature elements where then embedded into the island to enhance functionality and aesthetics.

The design specified in-framed tulip wood, walnut and burr walnut doors with solid walnut dovetailed drawers all manufactured to a bespoke specification. Unique elements included a curved glass display unit with 3D pattern, a feature cone, two elevated drum units and stone clad knee spaces. The varying height of feature elements enhances the impact achieved from the complex mix of materials, geometry and architecture. Lighting provides a holistic element to the design, offering flexibility in an open plan setting and encouraging the feeling of calm”. [Photography: Rory Corrigan RF Creative]

Cubello Ice Kitchen by Amr Designs

Through studying and predicting its customers’ present & future kitchen habits and preferences, Egyptian kitchen manufacturer Amr Helmy Designs claims to be able to invent breakthrough organic design solutions. The company’s catch phrase is “7 Years Ahead”, which sums up its goal to fill a gap in the kitchen market by 2015 by offering improved functionality, taste and service. With the Cubello Series, Amr Helmy was aiming to revolutionize kitchen design by offering a range that is designed around a grid system based on just 24 different units and one size of door.

This approach top kitchen design has a number of benefits. The factory has a minimum number of components to work with so a number of costs are reduced including: warehousing; machine set-up; packing; and shipping. The grid system allegedly makes it easier for designers to work with and ensures that all design output is aesthetically maximized.

The most interesting design aspect of the Cubello kitchen though has to be the innovative configuration options provided by the island unit. Featuring the sink and the cooktop, the island unit provides the main work area within the kitchen. Surface space is maximised through the use of off-set counter tops and a swivelling surface that contains the kitchen sink. This surface is on wheels so it can easily be repositioned for best use of space.

Modern Origami Inspired Kitchen: Appealing or Too Extravagant?

Modern design is all about breaking established rules and constantly finding original ways of mixing function with aesthetics. This modern origami-inspired kitchen designed by Estudiosat for manufacturer Delta Cocinas comes with a twist. Found on Home-designing, the glossyArtica Kitchen seems especially developed for the ones enthusiastically adopting change. Braking the pattern of straight surfaces, the cabinets in the new collection are partially irregular, the overall effect being that of a folded paper. This style extravaganza apparently meant no compromises in costs or function: “Artica uses the emotional language of design to create a radically new product without losing any of its functionality. its form is the result of interpreting of the digital language that surrounds us, by applying the methods of deconstructivism on a three dimensional surface. The result is a visual impact that requires no added company investment, and maintains traditional production processes while respecting the environment“. Minimal Kitchens by Piet Boon for Warendorf

Not so long ago, we featured the Tower Kitchen designed by Philippe Starck for Warendorf. With this kitchen collection the German manufacturer has once again sought to collaborate with a high profile designer, this time in the guise of world renowned Dutch designer and master craftsman Piet Boon. His collection consists of three different kitchen designs, all of which bring a sense of subdued luxury to the heart of the home.

Original is a kitchen that is functional and timeless, comfortable and pure, distinctive and harmonious. It demonstrates the effect that can be created by combining natural materials with sophisticated surfaces. Stockholm on the other hand is inspired by a variety of Scandinavian design influences, whilst London, with its conspicuously minimalist design, highlights the kitchen’s role as a living space and pushes its functional role into the background.

Piet Boon’s design philosophy is best seen in the use of a natural and subtle palette of subdued colours and materials, which marry authenticity with harmony and timelessness. He says: ”Kitchens are the heart of the home, so we design them with passion. Renowned kitchen manufacturer Warendorf has been entrusted with the production of our high quality, functional kitchen designs, which are as much an expression of traditional values and the craftsman’s skill.”

Kitchens That will make the Cut

The astounding Artica kitchen by Estudiosat, function is in be managed by task set by manufacturer Delta Cocinas to create a kitchen that stepped beyond your box through the form of kitchens you can buy about the marketplace; looking at the origami-esque geometric folds of the cabinet fronts, it looks like the existing constricting design ‘box’ have been stamped upon, to produce one very new and edgy concept.

The cut ice-like surface comes without any compromise on functionality and leads to no added company investment, maintaining traditional production processes and still managing to respect the planet.

The rich wood teamed with industrial metallic shutters here provides superb contrast, and note the employment of differing workbench materials that compliment the 2 tones of cabinetry along the tall storage run.

Uber-chic wallpaper effect fronts on floating cupboards span a wide-ranging wall run, causing an elegant textured focal feature.
