Street Furniture System

Street is a multi-storage and display unit ideal for placing magazines, books and plants. The furniture system is composed of four parts: a basic frame and three modules – one that takes on the iconic form of a house, as well as cube-like high and low units. These parts can be combined in a variety of ways, such as stacked, to function as shelves or a room divider within public and private spaces. via

"Diamond Wood" by Tesler-Mendelovitch

Tesler-Mendelovitch is an emerging "textile design team [who] research and experiment a wide range of materials to create entirely new end stage products for industry and art." Their latest project, "Diamond Wood," is a series of tables and stools that are made from a new flexible wood surface. The layered veneer material is "lightweight and sustainable and composed of a thin, flexible, yet strong wood surface component that can be widely adapted to furniture and interior design."

The result looks something like a magically magnified bangle or jewelry box, thanks partly to their veneers. "By combining natural fibers with traditional craftsmanship and new technology, the team manipulates and blends familiar materials to create the aesthetic of this new series."

The collection was featured in the exhibition design for artist Sigalit Landau's Soil Nursing solo show at Paris's Kamel Mennour Gallery.

The striking contrast between the abstract marble sculptures and their highly geometric pedestals duly enhances the compelling grotesqueness of the former and the understated logic of the latter.

"Diamond Wood" by Tesler-Mendelovitch is available now through Talents Design.

Chelsea Workspace

Program: Bespoke desk and storage system for a private home office
Location: London, England
Year: 2011
Status: Complete
This home office for a private personal investment advisor responds to the clients brief of a discrete yet sculptural design solution for a home office by conceptually draping a dynamic surface over an orthogonal arrangement of the required home office elements including a work desk, storage units, printer, paper shredder etc. The fluid geometric form is articulated as a series of alternating CNC milled birch plywood ribs. With a strict budget, this project was an exercise in reailizing complex geometries with limited finances.

Express to Impress: Spectacular Curtain Door by Matharoo Associates

“Knocking at the Curtain Door” is an expression that you probably won’t hear too often. TheMatharoo Associates, an architectural firm from India completed one of the most interesting doors you will ever see. We have spotted this astonishing project on Design Milk and we decided to share this experience with all of you. The Curtain Door is a contemporary piece of art and as the name says it, unveils a high structure that resembles rather to…a curtain. Beautifully shaped, this fine piece of visually imposing art reminds us of a piano riddle, where the notes start dancing, getting lost high above the skylines. Beyond this surreal approach, there lies the work of valuable “craftsmen” that managed to link 40 sections of thick Burma teak.

The iconic entrance is fixed between two concrete walls, allowing visitors to observe The Curtain Door by taking into account two scenarios: shut and opened. When shut, the doorway keeps a massive look, but once opened it unveils a beautiful curvaceous shape. At a closer look, the blossoming curtain details point out the complexity of such an artistic object. The meandering shape is the result of carved wood, pulleys, ball bearings, a wire rope and a counterweight, which has been carefully hidden. Each and every section respects a certain symmetry. Seen as a whole, it instantly generates that “wow” effect. The Curtain Door is massive and impressive and definitely worth seeing!

Out of the Woods at the V&A museum

London Design Festival: every scrap of material and minute of production time was carefully recorded during the manufacturing of these twelve wooden chairs, helping the Royal College of Art students that designed them to measure each one’s sustainability.

Top: Well Proven Chair by James Shaw and Marjan van Aubel

The data was used to produce life-cycle assessments, charting the projected lifespan of each chair against the cost of resources and processes needed to produce it.

The entire collection was manufactured from different hardwoods and includes a flatpack bench (above), a stool held together with string (below) and a one-man boat.

The Well Proven Chair (top) is formed from timber shavings mixed with bio-resin, which together form a sloppy paste that hardens as it dries.

The Folded Chair (above) has an asymmetric structure that collapses for easy storage, while the Solitude chair (below) has solid sides and was inspired by church seating in Cyprus.

Santi Guerrero Font used a strong ash to create his chair (below) so that he could slim down the thickness from 20 millimetres to 12.

Lauren Davies produced her high-back chair (below) using offcuts from nine different types of wood, while Michael Warren created his stool (below that) from a single piece of timber.

The students worked with manufacturer Benchmark to build the chairs and were supervised by tutors Sebastian Wrong and Harry Richardson.

Commissioned by the American Hardwood Export Council, the collection was exhibited at the V&A museum, as part of the London Design Festival.

Twelve writers have also penned stories and poems imagining the life story of each chair, which are presented together as a book with photographs by Petr Krejčí.

Here’s some more text from the exhibition organisers:

An innovative collaboration between the American Hardwood Export Council and the Royal College of Art Design Products programme offers a fascinating approach to working with an age-old material – American hardwood.

Out of the Woods explores the creative and environmental potential of this naturally renewable material by looking at the entire life cycle of each product. Working with British furniture producer Benchmark, internationally renowned for its craftsmanship in wood, RCA students – under tutors Sebastian Wrong (Established & Sons) and Harry Richardson (Committee) – have each designed a chair or seat using American Hardwood.

The production was carefully monitored with the help of sustainability experts, p.e. international, to prepare an accurate life cycle impact report for each chair. The reports contribute to AHEC’s on-going research into hardwood’s sustainability credentials and inform the students of the full cradle-to-grave environmental impact of their design and material choices. Inspired by the life cycle of each chair, twelve well known writers have created a work of art to tell the story: Adventures of Twelve hardwood Chairs.
